Pilot Podcasts helps a podcast host determine the viability of a politically and religiously themed concept, identify barriers to audience engagement, and gain clarity on format and naming before launch.
Challenges
- A new podcast host is curious to see if his potential audience would agree with content that blends religion, politics, and the justice system
- The team worries if the intended audience likes or understands the name
- The host wonders if the show should be narrative or conversational
- The Production team wonders if they should release the content during or after the 2024 election cycle.
Overview
- Potentially alienating listeners by adding religion to the conversation
- Concerned about the name
- Torn between the show being narrative/investigative vs. conversational
Solution
The client submitted a 2 page development brief around the concept of the show. Pilot created a focus group of Millennial and GenZ listeners who are interested in politics, news religion, and society.
The focus group was asked questions based on:
- Likeliness to listen to the podcast
- If they understood the meaning of “Gopher Wood.” Why or why not?
- If they would prefer this content be narrative or conversational?
- Other podcasts they listen to
Findings
1. The name of the show is alienating. It needs to be changed.
Less than 5 people in the focus group understood the biblical connection to Gopher Wood. Many listeners felt slightly less engaged.
2. The show must be conversational with well-known or knowledgeable guests.
Considering the gravity of the topic and the host declares himself an expert, the potential audience expects him to back it up with evidence and sources. However, they feel adding a co-host or guest may make it less boring.
3. The focus group prefers a political aspect over the religious aspect.
Over 80% of the group felt this way.
Results
- The host has insights into how their target market feels about their chosen name and knows it could be a barrier to listeners.
- The host understands the importance of guests on the show to provide an extra layer of legitimacy to his content.
- The team left with a lengthy list of potential podcasts to buy ads on and do cross-promos with.
